Scientists have found four groups of emperor penguins in Antarctica that they did not know about before. These groups, called “colonies,” were found with new satellite images.

This compilation of satellite images, furnished by the E.U.'s Copernicus program via the British Antarctic Survey in January 2024, reveals four recent emperor penguin settlement locales in Antarctica. (Copernicus/British Antarctic Survey via AP) This compilation of satellite images, provided by the E.U.'s Copernicus program via the British Antarctic Survey in January 2024, depicts four recent emperor penguin settlement locales in Antarctica. (Copernicus/British Antarctic Survey via AP) Researchers have pinpointed 66 emperor penguin settlements and fewer than 300,000 breeding pairs. The discovery of the four new settlements does not substantially alter population estimates for the birds. Nonetheless, Fretwell noted that the migration of one settlement aids scientists in comprehending the penguins' movement patterns.

Daniel Zitterbart, a penguin researcher at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the U.S. state of Massachusetts, who was not engaged in the study of the newfound penguins, suggested that it remains uncertain whether the new clusters seceded from larger settlements. Zitterbart indicated that the locations where the penguins procreate are undergoing transformations and that, as global temperatures rise, more "penguins will be on the move."
